#11 In Tune
If you want to achieve on a global scale, then whether you’re in business or in sport you need a team of people around you. No one does this by themselves. There is, however, a level beyond engagement that makes a difference.
In the last blog post we talked about engagement. If you want to achieve on a global scale, then whether you’re in business or in sport you need a team of people around you. No one does this by themselves. There is, however, a level beyond engagement that makes a difference.
This is about the tune or the rhythm with which your organisation and your team operates. It always staggers me how few organizations really plan the rhythm with which they operate. It can be simple things like the daily huddle—when does it happen, how long does it last, what’s the really simple three-point agenda that you have? What’s your sales cycle in your organisation? Do you have a long sales cycle, like in architecture —so you only need to have monthly sales meetings? Or do you have a very short sales cycle, like in an online business where your sales meetings need to be daily? When are your competitive events if you’re in sports, what’s the cycle, what’s the rhythm with which you and your team need to work?
One of the famous examples I remember reading about was Dame Kelly Holmes, who won two gold medals. Her coach realized she was overtraining. Because she was overtraining and too desperate to perform, she was often injured. No one ever saw what she was really capable of. All her coach did was to stop her overtraining and bring her into peak condition, bring her into peak tune at the right time for those Olympic Games. Guess what? She won two gold medals and the rest is history.
What do you need to do in your organization to make sure you’re all in tune? You may have got rid of all the unconscious interference, you may be performing personally at a high level, but what are you doing beyond engagement to make sure that you and everyone else in your organisation is really working in tune, so that you’re delivering performance at a high level?
