Empathetic Leadership - Breakthrough Leadership

#12 Empathetic Leadership

If you really understand how to deal with and get the best out of other people then you yourself will be able to perform at a higher level than your competition.

Empathetic leadership, for me, is at the top of the performance pyramid. All the layers are in chronological order. You have to deal with each one in turn before you get to the next level. The point is that the empathetic leader is the guy or girl that holds everything together. If you really understand how to deal with and get the best out of other people then you yourself will be able to perform at a higher level than your competition.

Believe it or not, there are actually tools that you can use to develop your empathy. Empathy can be a learned skill. We use a tool called the ECR 360. It’s an emotional intelligence tool. It’s normed on 50,000 senior leaders around the world, so it’s a clinically proven tool and not a commercial tool. We’re very confident when using it that we can model someone’s emotional intelligence. We can then go through with them, the strategies that will allow them to improve their emotional intelligence, their effectiveness at leading and being with other people.

If you have the aspiration to operate at a global level, to perform at the highest level in sport or business you need to have that empathy with others. A good household name example is Toto Wolff of the AMG Mercedes Petronas Formula One team. To me he’s the epitome of an empathetic leader. To what degree are you like him, and to what degree do you think you need to improve your leadership style to bring the best out of others? Figuring that out allows you to perform at the highest level.
