#1 The Personal Best

Welcome to the performance series, this is the first in a series of videos about how we can raise our level of performance. So when we talk about performance we can also think about a concept called the PB (Personal Best).

Welcome to the performance series, this is the first in a series of videos about how we can raise our level of performance. So when we talk about performance we can also think about a concept called the PB (Personal Best).

In the world of sport, this is well understood. It doesn’t matter what game or sport you play, you’ve got a PB in there somewhere. Obviously, if you’re in athletics your PB is going to be the time it takes you to run the race or it would be the distance you threw the shot or the javelin. If you’re in a team sport it might be the number of yards that you made, the number of passes completed or the number of goals scored. There are all kinds of ways that sports scientists can help you figure out what your most important PB is.

In business, the idea of the PB is less common but it’s still a great concept. Salespeople for example love having the idea of a personal best. What is my greatest sales achievement so far this month? What’s my goal for next month? What’s the best I’ve achieved? There are all kinds of ways in which you can develop PBs in business.

One of the points I want to make in this series is actually there is a state beyond your PB state that allows you to perform at a higher level, with less effort, and that’s a bit of a paradox. So let me be clear, you can actually perform at a higher level than you’ve been able to achieve so far, but actually, you can achieve a higher level with less effort than it would currently take you to achieve your current PB.

That’s the paradox we’re going to investigate over this series to show you how that’s possible and how you might be able to achieve that yourself in your own life and in your own business or sport.
